Nenmatsu Nenshi ”年末年始”

I was wondering when the city hall is open in this year from because I needed to go there.
I checked on the website of the city hall , it just said "Nenmatsu Nenshi yasumi".

Nenmatsu means "at the end of the year".
Nenshi means "at the beginning of the year".

I felt like understanding the meaning somehow, but I was troubled when it opened from.

I checked it on the internet again...
It means that until January 3 that is a day it before the first business day of the year from December 29 that is the next day of the last business day of the year.

Finally I found out it will open tomorrow...
Japanese is sometimes difficult for me who is native Japanese too...

I remember when I was a child , most of shops and restaurants were not opened so soon around new year.
But these days many shops and restaurants are opened even on New Years day.

Japanese makes Japanese busier...

市役所に行く用事があるので、いつから開いてるんだっけなと思いながらホームページをチェックしてみると、「年末年始休み」ときっぱり書いてありました・・・。

年末とは“年の最後“
年始とは“年の始め”

なぜか何となくわかったような気にはなったのですが、結局いつから開いてるのかわからずじまい。
それでまたインターネットで調べてみると、年末年始というのは

“御用納めの翌日である12月29日から御用始めの前日である1月3日までのことをいう”そうで、ちなみに「御用納め」とは官庁や役所などでその年の執務を終わりにすることらしく、一般的には12月28日のことを指すんだそうです。

やっと明日から開くんだとわかりました。
日本語って根っから日本人の私にも時々難しいです。

私が子供のころって、ほとんどのお店やレストランは年明けすぐになんて開いてなかったように思いますが、最近は元旦でも空いてるところが沢山ありますね。

日本人はさらに日本人を忙しくしているようです。
